On July 1, 2026, Ontario Auto Insurance is getting a significant update. The new framework gives policyholders more choice and flexibility in how their auto coverage is built. If you have a personal or commercial auto policy in Ontario, this affects you. The good news: nothing changes on your current auto policy today.
Tricia Wright, our Personal Lines Manager, walks through the changes in a one-minute video below.
What’s changing
Ontario is moving away from the standard, one-size-fits-all auto insurance package. Starting July 1, 2026, you will be able to build an auto policy that better reflects your lifestyle, your family situation, and what truly matters to you. The mandatory framework is the same. The flexibility is new.
What stays mandatory
The coverage that matters most stays in place. Medical, rehabilitation, and attendant care benefits remain mandatory on every Ontario auto policy. If you are seriously injured, your essential injury coverage is not affected.
What becomes optional
Several benefits that were previously automatic will become optional add-ons:
- Income replacement
- Caregiver coverage
- Housekeeping
- Death and funeral benefits
These coverages are not being taken away. They are still available. The change is that they move from being included by default to being something you choose to add.
You don’t have to wait until renewal
As of July 1, 2026, you have the right to contact us to discuss how these changes apply to your auto policy. You don’t have to wait until your renewal date to have that conversation.
What this means for your current policy
The most important thing to know: nothing changes on your current auto policy automatically. Whatever’s in place today stays exactly as it is until your renewal date. No mid-term changes. No surprises.
When your renewal date approaches, your Nicol Insurance broker will reach out to walk you through your options together and make sure your coverage still fits where you are in life.
